Description✦
Old-fashioned Weigela "Ruby Queen" is a dwarf cultivar prized for the striking contrast between its dark foliage and bright flowers. It is an ideal choice for those who want to add deep "wine" tones to the garden.
Flowering and foliage
- Flowers: They are bell-shaped and have a rich ruby-pink or bright crimson colour.
- Foliage: The foliage has a dark purple, almost brown colour. If the bush grows in the sun, the colour becomes as deep as possible, while in shade it may turn a little greener.
- Period: Abundant flowering occurs in June, with a possible repeat flowering in late summer.
Size and form
- Compactness: This is a true mini-shrub. It rarely exceeds 0.6–0.8 metres in height and width.
- Form: The bush has a neat, rounded and dense crown that holds its shape well without frequent pruning.
Growing conditions
- Light: Only sun. Sunlight is critically important for keeping the foliage a rich dark colour.
- Soil: It likes fertile, well-drained and moist soils. It does not tolerate waterlogging.
- Frost resistance: Fairly hardy, but because of its small size it often ends up under the snow in winter, which helps it overwinter well.
