Description✦
Old-fashioned Weigela "Rubidor" is a unique cultivar that draws the eye with its unusual contrast: bright yellow, "golden" foliage combined with intense red flowers. It is an ideal choice for those who want to add light and vivid colour to the garden.
Flowering and foliage
- Flowers: they are bell-shaped and have a rich ruby-red or deep pink colour. Against the light foliage they look exceptionally bright and contrasting.
- Foliage: the main feature of the cultivar is the large foliage of an intense lemon-yellow or golden colour. It keeps its bright shade throughout the whole season, without scorching in the sun.
- Period: abundant flowering lasts through June and July. A repeat flowering is possible in late summer.
Size and form
- Size: this is a medium-sized shrub that reaches 1.5–2 metres in height and width.
- Form: the bush has a spreading, dense crown with numerous upright shoots that gradually arch a little to the sides.
Growing conditions
- Light: it does best in sunny spots. It is in the sun that the foliage takes on its signature golden colour (in shade it turns greenish).
- Soil: it prefers fertile, moderately moist and well-drained soils. It needs regular watering, especially in dry periods.
- Frost resistance: high, the cultivar overwinters well in our conditions. Young plants can be lightly covered in their first years of life.
