Weigela 'Nana Purpurea' — this is a compact, slow-growing shrub prized for its beautiful combination of dark foliage and bright flowers. It is a wonderful option for small gardens that need a low colour accent.

Flowering and foliage

• Flowers: they are bell-shaped, coloured a rich dark pink or crimson with a yellowish centre. They appear in large numbers, creating a vivid contrast with the crown.
• Foliage: one of the main features of the cultivar. It has an unusual brown-red or dark purple tint. In the sun the colour becomes more saturated, while in shade it may change to a green-brown.
• Period: profuse flowering lasts from late May to the end of June. A repeat flowering is possible in autumn.

Size and shape

• Compactness: this is a low-growing cultivar, which usually reaches 0.8–1 metre in height and width.
• Shape: the bush has a dense, rounded and fairly compact shape. It grows slowly, which allows it to keep a tidy appearance for a long time.

Growing conditions

• Lighting: it does best in open sun — this guarantees bright flowering and the darkest possible leaf colour.
• Soil: it prefers fertile, well-drained and moist soils. It does not like waterlogging.
• Frost resistance: fairly high, however young plants are recommended to be covered slightly in harsh snowless winters.
