Moss

Moss (Bryophyta) is a soft velvet carpet for those corners of the garden that are too dark and damp for anything else. Tiny stems and leaves knit together into a dense green cushion, and above it rise slender stalks with spore capsules that give the carpet its particular texture.

Mosses are planted in shady damp corners, Japanese gardens, on stones and bark and in the joints of paving - wherever a lawn no longer holds. This is not one species but a whole group of plants, so the size of the cushion and its light and moisture needs depend on the particular moss you choose.
