Description✦
Hybrid deutzia 'Magicien' (Deutzia x hybrida 'Magicien') - the name means the Magician. In late spring the slender arching shoots are covered from end to end with small bell-shaped flowers up to 2 cm across: pink, each petal finished with a crisp white margin as if outlined with a fine brush.
Flowering is brief, around a fortnight. It is noticeably more compact than 'Strawberry Fields' at 1-1.5 m in height and width, so it slots easily into flower borders, cottage gardens and planting on a slope. The bright green lance-shaped leaves stay a good backdrop afterwards.
Key characteristics:
- What makes it special: In autumn the leaves take on a burgundy tone - restrained rather than spectacular, yet the shrub stays noticeable once flowering is over.
- Dimensions: At 10 years 1-1.5 m tall and the same across.
- Hardiness: Takes down to -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
- Flowering: In May the branches are covered with bell-shaped flowers up to 2 cm - pink with a white edging.
- Light: It grows and flowers best in full sun, and takes light partial shade calmly.
- Soil: It loves fertile, moist soil, and generally takes chalky, clay, loamy and sandy ground well.
- Watering: Water moderately and evenly; established bushes take a short drought in their stride.
- Care: Prune right after flowering and cut out dry branches every year - deutzia shoots are short-lived.
- Landscape use: Flower borders, groups in shrub plantings, banks and slopes, cottage gardens and informal hedges.
- Origin: The authentic cultivar was raised by the French nursery of Lemoine.
