Description

Japanese Quince 'Sargenti' (Chaenomeles japonica 'Sargenti') — orange flame of the spring garden

Chaenomeles 'Sargenti' is one of the brightest, most compact and undemanding ornamental shrubs, one that flowers remarkably early, while most plants in the garden are only just waking up. This cultivar is prized for its low, spreading crown and its explosive, incredibly abundant flame-orange flowering. Beyond its high ornamental value, 'Sargenti' is also a valuable fruiting plant — in autumn the shrub produces useful, fragrant fruit often called "northern lemons".

🌟 Key advantages of the cultivar:

  • Compact, spreading form: Thanks to its low height and wide crown, the shrub is ideal as ground cover, for stabilising slopes, and for planting in the lower tiers of the garden.
  • An early burst of colour: Flowers appear on the shoots in April-May, before the leaves have fully opened. The shrub looks as though it is wrapped in soft orange flame.
  • Useful, vitamin-rich fruit: In September-October small, round, lemon-yellow fruit ripen. They are highly fragrant, rich in vitamin C, and excellent for making healthy tea, jam, candied fruit or syrup.
  • Maximum hardiness: The cultivar is completely undemanding about growing conditions, tolerates drought and urban pollution beautifully, and needs no constant care.
  • Height only 0.6-0.8 m, though width can reach 1.2-1.4 m. Has a dense, spreading, cushion-shaped crown. The branches may bear small thorns.
