Deutzia 'Strawberry Fields' (Deutzia x hybrida 'Strawberry Fields') has the darkest flower colour of all the hybrid deutzias. From red buds open star-shaped flowers up to 2.5 cm across: deep, almost strawberry pink on the outside, pale pink to white within.

It blooms so heavily in May and June that the shoots bend under the weight of the clusters. In five to ten years the bush makes 1.5-2.5 m in height and width, which suits it to mixed groups, informal hedges and flower borders, town and coastal gardens included. The heaviest flowering comes with open sun and a prune straight after bloom.

Key characteristics:

  • What makes it special: The flowers are not only vivid but lightly scented, so the shrub is worth planting beside a path or a seating spot.
  • Dimensions: At 10 years 1.5-2.5 m tall and the same across.
  • Hardiness: Takes down to -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
  • Flowering: In May-June the bush is covered with star-shaped flowers up to 2.5 cm - deep pink outside, pale pink within.
  • Light: It grows in sun and light partial shade, but only open sun gives the most abundant flowering.
  • Soil: It loves fertile, moist soil, and generally takes chalky, clay, loamy and sandy ground well.
  • Watering: Water moderately and evenly; established bushes take a short drought in their stride.
  • Care: Prune right after flowering and cut out dry branches every year - deutzia shoots are short-lived.
  • Landscape use: Groups in shrub borders, plantings by foundations, informal hedges, slopes, city and coastal gardens.
  • Origin: The cultivar holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
