Description✦
Japanese Spiraea 'Dart's Red' is one of the most vivid summer-flowering spiraeas. It is prized for its compactness and very intense, "dense" flower colour, which does not fade in the sun.
Highlights and conditions:
- Appearance: A compact bush (60–80 cm) with a neat globe-shaped form.
- Flowering: Rich crimson-red corymbs in June–July. If you cut off the spent blooms, it will flower a second time in September.
- Foliage: Dark green in summer, and in spring and autumn it takes on striking purple-burgundy tints.
- Light and soil: Only full sun (it fades in shade). Undemanding as to soils, but likes moderate moisture.
- Hardiness: Fully frost-resistant, tolerates urban dust and air pollution.
- Care: A low spring pruning (to 15–20 cm from the ground) is essential for density and abundant flowering.
