Description

Japanese Barberry 'Atropurpurea Nana' is one of the most popular dwarf barberry cultivars, prized for its compact, cushion-shaped form and the rich colour of its foliage.

Key characteristics:

  • Crown shape: Very dense, compact, flat-rounded or cushion-shaped. The branches are densely covered with small thorns.
  • Size: A true dwarf. The height of a mature plant usually does not exceed 40–60 cm, and the width up to 80–100 cm. It grows slowly.
  • Foliage: Small, refined, 1–2 cm long. In summer it has a rich purple-brown or dark red colour. In autumn the shrub turns fiery red.
  • Flowering: In May small yellow flowers (red on the outside) open, which contrast beautifully with the dark foliage.
  • Fruit: Bright red, glossy berries that ripen in September and adorn the shrub through winter.
