Korean Fir 'Silberlocke'

Korean fir 'Silberlocke' (Abies koreana 'Silberlocke') is one of the most recognisable conifers you can plant. Its soft needles curl upwards and turn their silver-white undersides to the world, so the crown shimmers with silver while the green shows through. Even young trees set upright purple cones.

The shape is a dense, compact pyramid: about 2.4 m in the first 10 years, eventually 6-9 m. Plant it as a specimen on a lawn or beside an entrance, where the silvery needles can be seen close up. Unlike the golden 'Aurea', the drama here comes from texture rather than colour, so it sits beautifully among dark conifers.

• What makes it special: The cultivar name translates as "silver curl": the needles twist upwards to show their white undersides, so the tree looks dusted with frost even in summer.
• Dimensions: By 10 years it reaches about 2.4 m - a compact pyramid.
• Hardiness: Hardy down to -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
• Light: Plant it in full sun or partial shade - it is happiest in a cool spot without a hot microclimate.
• Soil: It asks for fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil; heavy clays and waterlogged spots are simply not its story.
• Watering: Water moderately and evenly: the soil should stay fresh, but never waterlogged.
• Care: Care is straightforward: watch for root rots, needle rust, aphids and mites in hot weather.
• Landscape use: A compact fir for a specimen planting in the yard and for a decorative screen where summers stay cool.
• Origin: Introduced to cultivation by the German nursery of Gunther Horstmann in Schneverdingen.
