Description

Common Juniper 'Suecica Aurea' (Juniperus communis 'Suecica Aurea') — an exceptionally ornamental, bright coniferous shrub with a distinct architectural form. This cultivar combines a classic, strict columnar crown with a striking golden colouring, making it a wonderful accent in any garden composition.

Key characteristics of the cultivar

  • Crown shape and habit: A slender, dense, distinctly columnar or narrowly conical crown. The branches grow vertically, set very densely and pressed against the trunk, so the shrub keeps its strict geometric form throughout its life. The top is slightly drooping, which is a characteristic feature of the Suecica forms.
  • Foliage colour and texture: The needles are needle-like, dense and prickly. The main feature of the cultivar is the intense golden-yellow or lemon shade of the young growth in spring and summer. Over time, the foliage inside the shrub becomes greenish-yellow or greyish-green, creating a beautiful soft contrast. In winter the plant takes on a noble bronze-yellow colouring.
  • Growth rate: Grows slowly. The annual growth in height is about 10–15 cm, and in width — no more than 5 cm.
  • Dimensions: At 10 years of age the plant reaches about 1.5–1.8 m in height. An adult shrub can grow up to 2.5–3 m tall and up to 0.8–1 m in diameter.
