Eastern Arborvitae 'Jantar'

White cedar 'Jantar' (Thuja occidentalis 'Jantar') is a narrow golden candle in the garden. Bright yellow floods the scale-like foliage, warming to a soft orange-yellow by winter, and dense side branching keeps the crown even and gap-free right down to the ground.

In ten years it reaches about 2 m with a spread of only 0.5 m, which makes it a natural choice for narrow hedges, avenues and vertical accents by an entrance where ordinary thujas simply will not fit. Give it sun and shelter from wind, and shake snow off the branches in winter.

• What makes it special: The name Jantar means "amber", and the foliage lives up to it: bright yellow in summer, a warm orange-yellow in the cold.
• Dimensions: 1.8-2 m tall and just 0.5 m wide at 10 years.
• Hardiness: Withstands -45 °C (USDA zone 2).
• Light: Full sun or partial shade; in deep shade the foliage becomes noticeably less dense.
• Soil: It likes evenly moist, well-drained loam of neutral or alkaline reaction.
• Watering: Water regularly: this plant does not forgive the soil drying out.
• Care: Plant it in a spot sheltered from wind, and shake the snow off in winter so the branches stay intact.
• Landscape use: Ideal for a narrow hedge, an avenue, a vertical accent and foundation planting.
• Origin: A Polish bud mutation of 'Smaragd' found in 2000 at Lysomice; named ACS Collectors' Conifer of the Year 2016.
