Rhododendron 'Pohjola's Daughter'
An exceptionally hardy Finnish cultivar, named after a heroine of the epic "Kalevala". It is one of the most resilient rhododendrons in the world.
Key characteristics:
- Flowers: Bright purple in bud, opening to soft lilac or almost white with brown-green spotting on the upper petal.
- Flowering: May – June. The inflorescences are large, dense and very elegant.
- Dimensions: A low-growing but spreading shrub; at 10 years of age its height is about 0.8–1 m, and its width up to 1.2 m.
- Foliage: Leathery, dark green; the young shoots have an attractive silvery bloom.
- Conditions: Needs acidic soil and a partially shaded spot sheltered from wind.
- Frost resistance: Phenomenal (down to -34°C). The buds do not freeze even in severe winters.
